Processing of Aluminium

Bauxite is a sedimentary rock with a high aluminium concentration (usually 46-60%). Bauxite is frequently buried beneath several meters of rock and clay, which must be removed before the bauxite can be extracted. The bauxite is then crushed or washed before being transported for processing.

In the mid-1880s, two independent processes for producing aluminium were created and employed in sequence. To extract aluminium from bauxite, the Bayer method employs a chemical process. The Hall-Heroult technique extracts aluminium from alumina or aluminium oxide generated by the Bayer process using electrolysis.

  • Aluminum Alloys A356

A356 aluminium alloys are mostly composed of pure aluminium and silicon, with minor amounts of magnesium, iron, copper, zinc, and manganese. This alloy has strong strength, good elongation, and great ductility. The A356 grade is known as an all-purpose aluminium since it is employed in a variety of industrial industries to create both basic and complicated products.   • Aluminum Alloys F357

F357 alloys are foundry-grade metals that are mostly composed of aluminium, silicon, and magnesium. The alloy contains no beryllium because it may be used as a replacement for other aluminium alloys that do, such as A357 grades. This alloy’s properties include excellent strength and thermal treatability.

  • Aluminum Alloys C355

C355 alloys are cast-grade aluminium alloys having greater copper content, as well as aluminium, silicon, iron, magnesium, manganese, zinc, and titanium. It is less ductile than A366 but has a far higher strength. This alloy is also weldable and corrosion resistant.

  • Alloys ALSi10Mg

ALSi10Mg alloys are cast aluminium alloys that have been age-hardened (precipitation hardening). By eliminating more impurities, this heat treatment technique improves the strength of the aluminium. This alloy offers a good corrosion resistance and mechanical strength while being light in weight.

  • BS L99

Because the castings have been solution and precipitation treated, the BS L99 aluminium grades meet British Standards. It is mostly composed of aluminium, silicon, and magnesium. It is resistant to corrosion and has outstanding machining qualities.            

  • BS L169

Another aluminium grade that meets British Standards is BS L169, which has castings that have been artificially aged and solution treated. Because the metal is highly fluid, it is perfect for thin-walled castings. It has high strength and machinability.

  • Aluminum’s Characteristics

Aluminum is light and strong, with high thermal and electrical conductivity, high reflectivity, superior corrosion resistance, outstanding workability, and an appealing look. Almost any finish may be applied to it. It is neither magnetic, poisonous, nor flammable.

Aluminum has a density of 1.175 lb/in3, which is about one-third that of steel, copper, and brass. Some of the more powerful aluminium alloys are stronger than mild steel. Aluminum has a melting point of 1215°F.
